But Ping, a new mysterious new iOS and Android appfrom the makers of Secret, is trying to make notifications something to look forward to.

Here at Potluck we recently started using Framer.js to prototype and try out interaction ideas we come up with for our iOS app. Framer is a Javascript framework for prototyping interactions and animations for mobile and desktop apps. It’s a great alternative to Quartz Composer as it has a less steep learning curve, and prototypes easily run both on desktop and the iPhone. We found Framer to be the perfect step up from Keynote to make realistic, interactive prototypes.

Adobe’s Photoshop is the graphics software brand that successfully crossed over into the zeitgeist, but the company’s Illustrator product was no mean achievement either. This nineteen-minute documentary by Ami Capen tells its story, starting with its antecedents in traditional graphic design (if you remember Koh-I-Noor’s Rapidograph pens, you’ll smile or cringe or both) and through its evolution into a new category of software. In many ways, Illustrator was the breakthrough that created a whole new breed of designer; it’s nice to see it get a bit of the credit it’s due.

The commentary leading up to WWDC this year has been largely dominated by Apple’s $3 billion acquisition of Beats Electronics and Beats Music. I didn’t get it at first, that’s for sure. But the truth is, I don’t think there is much to get.
At this year’s WWDC, Apple sparked controversy when they announced that OSX Yosemite would ditch Lucida Grande in favor of iOS 7’s current typeface of choice, Helvetica Neue. Though some folks are quick to point to things like Erik Spiekermann’s bluntly titled “Helvetica Sucks,” which ostensibly proves how poorly Helvetica Neue reads at small point sizes, the choice to make Helvetica Neue the standard across both OS X Yosemite and iOS 8 makes a lot of sense to me.

Since his death in 1999, collaborators and family members have come forward to shed light on the inner workings of one of cinema’s great directors, and the films and directors that he loved and that served as his own film school. The BFI has published a great list of Kubrick’s favorite films, influences, and an interviewwith his long-time producer Jan Harlan, and it’s required reading for any student of cinema.
