I made prototypes with Quartz Composer for a while, the main reason why was to get to know the tool itself, and of course for fun. As outputs grew, I decided to gather things up and post online. It featured at various design news sources including Sidebar.io and Designer News.

The etymology of the word "benchmark" can be traced back to 19th century land surveying. In its original sense, a benchmark was a cut made into stone to secure a "bench", or kind of bracket, used to mount measuring equipment. Its figurative meaning of "a standard by which something is measured" was later repurposed to all walks of epistemology.

For many technology companies, design is mysterious. So when I work with startups, I try to demystify design by talking about processes and skills. The idea is: design is not a magical creative thing that designers are blessed to do. It’s rational and objective, and the components are pretty easy to understand.

Following a series of software releases over the last week including OS X 10.9.3, iTunes 11.2, Safari 7.0.4, and Podcasts for iOS, Apple has tonight released a point update to its iAd Producer software in the developer center. The previous update to the software was released earlier this year in March. The update includes, among other improvements, support for full-screen iPhone banner iAd creation. Last Autumn I was contacted by Andreas Holmström, Lead Communications Designer at Spotify, to see if I’d be interested in working on a new icon set to accompany the major redesign that was underway in-house. As a music fanatic, and a keen user of Spotify for about 6 years, I jumped at the chance! It’s fair to say I’ve discovered more new music with Spotify than any other medium, and I use it as much as a way of previewing albums I’m thinking of buying.
Apple is synonymous with upper echelon design, but very little is known about the company's design process. Most of Apple's ownemployees aren't allowed inside Apple's fabled design studios. So we're left piecing together interviews, or outright speculating about how Apple does it and what it's really like to be a designer at the company.
